Five Highlanders selected in 2017 MLB Draft
Five McLennan Baseball players were selected on the final day of the MLB Draft. Sophomores Nic Motley, Chris Roller, Cole Haring, and Joe Breaux along with freshman Josh Breaux were all chosen Wednesday afternoon.
Motley was the first Highlander to receive the call, being selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 14th round with the 416th overall pick. The catcher from Southlake recorded a .330 batting average with 14 doubles, 17 home runs and 63 RBIs this season. He also spent some time in the outfield and at first base.
The Los Angeles Dodgers selected Roller in the 30th round with the 910th overall pick. The centerfielder from Austin recorded a .414 batting average with 26 doubles, five triples, 10 home runs, 71 RBIs and 32 stolen bases for the Highlanders this spring.
The Breaux brothers from Tomball were both chosen in the 36th round. Older brother Joe went to the Philadelphia Phillies with the 1,073rd overall pick and younger brother Josh went just eight picks later (1,081st overall) to the Houston Astros. Joe, a left fielder, averaged .356 for the Highlanders with 19 doubles, six triples, 10 home runs and 68 RBIs. Josh spent time at catcher, designated hitter and pitcher this spring. He had a .401 batting average with 18 doubles, 19 home runs and 82 RBIs, and a 4.73 ERA with two saves on the mound.
Haring wrapped up the Highlander selections, going in the 37th round with the 1,118 overall pick to the Baltimore Orioles. The left fielder from Katy had a .363 average with 18 doubles, eight home runs and 31 RBIs.
