Twelve McLennan athletes sign Letters of Intent
Twelve McLennan Community College athletes signed National Letters of Intent, solidifying their plans to continue their academic and athletic careers at four-year colleges next fall.
Basketball guard Alex Mills signed with North Carolina Central University. A native of Laurens, South Carolina, Mills is averaging 13.3 points for the Highlanders this season. He earned North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) Player of the Week honors after scoring 30 points and going 10-12 from the free throw line in the first two games of the season. He was a first-team all-conference selection for the Highlanders in 2014-15.
Women's golfers Savannah Moody and Rachel Phillips signed with Oklahoma City University and the University of Texas at Arlington, respectively. Moody, of Aledo, and Phillips, of Plano, helped lead the Highlassies to a fourth place finish at the NJCAA National Championships, Region V Championship and an NJCAA All-Academic Team award last season.
Men's golfer Cory Donnell signed with the University of Texas at San Antonio. Donnell, a Garland, Texas native, helped lead the Highlanders to a tie for second at the NJCAA National Tournament in the spring and finished fourth place individually to earn first-team All-American honors.
Seven members of the Highlander baseball team that finished the 2015 season as runners-up at the JUCO World Series also signed letters of intent.
Pitcher Collin Sharp of Lorena and infielder Tucker Johnson signed with Baylor University. Sharp appeared in 12 games as a freshman, earning a 1-2 record with a 5.85 ERA. Johnson recorded a .326 batting average with 14 doubles and 44 RBIs as a freshman.
Pitchers Reece Calvert and Dustin Jourdan along with infielder Noah McGowan will remain teammates at Ohio State University. Calvert, of Plano, earned a 9-4 pitching record with a 5.45 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 14 appearances on the mound as a freshman. Jourdan, an Austin native, appeared in 22 games as a freshman, earning a 6-2 record with a 6.68 ERA and 26 strikeouts. McGowan from Magnolia, played outfield for the Highlanders as a freshman and recorded a .253 batting average with 14 doubles and 37 RBIs.
Infielders James Rudkin and Dimas Ojeda, signed with Washington State University and Florida Gulf Coast University, respectively. Rudkin, also of Plano, recorded a .374 batting average with 15 doubles and 44 RBIs as a freshman and was a JUCO World Series All-Tournament selection. Ojeda from Haltom City, recorded a .346 batting average with 11 doubles and 38 RBIs, he also picked up two saves on the mound as a freshman.
Sophomore transfer catcher Cory Voss signed with the University of Arizona. The Pueblo, Colorado, native recorded a .345 batting average with 14 doubles, five triples, five home runs and 35 RBIs while at the University of New Mexico to earn Mount West Conference Co-Freshman of the Year honors before transferring to McLennan.
