Highlanders, Wranglers split
The McLennan Highlanders and Cisco Wranglers split Monday's conference doubleheader in Cisco.
Cisco came from behind to win the opener 12-10 with Nathan Bertness taking the loss on the mound for McLennan.
The Highlanders scored three runs in the top of the first. Kirby McGuire doubled and scored on a single by Dimas Ojeda. Tucker Johnson was safe at first and moved to second on a Cisco error. Brandon Grudzielanek followed with a double to score Ojeda and Johnson.
Cisco got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second as William Mora doubled, moved to third on a balk and scored on a double by Brian Deaver.
McLennan added two runs in the third. Ojeda drew a walk and James Rudkin doubled. Johnson followed with a single to score Ojeda. Rudkin then scored on a sacrifice fly by Grudzielanek.
The Wranglers scored one run in the bottom of the third on Kiki Menendez's solo home run.
The Highlanders scored one run in the fourth as Will Fox walked, moved to second on a balk and scored on a single by McGuire.
Cisco added another run in the fourth as Noah Lee singled, moved to second on a Highlander error, advanced to third on a sacrifice by Mason Baker and scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Hungate.
The Wranglers exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the fifth. Menendez and German Morales both singled and scored on a single by Mora. Lee drew a walk and Wes Phillips reached on an error to load the bases. Baker drew a walk, bringing Mora in to score. Hungate singled to score Lee. Zach Rheams then singled to score Phillips and Baker. Menendez followed with a home run to clear the bases.
McLennan added three runs in the sixth. Braxton Wilks drew a walk but was out at second on a fielder's choice by Noah McGowan. Fox was safe at first on a Cisco error, advancing McGowan to third. McGowan and Fox scored on a double by McGuire. Ojeda then singled to score McGuire.
The Highlanders rounded out the scoring with a run in the top of the seventh as Grudzielanek singled, moved to second on a single by Wilks and scored on a single by McGowan.
McLennan bounced back to defeat Cisco 9-7 in the nightcap with Chris Glover getting the win on the mound and Ojeda picking up the save.
The Highlanders scored one run in the top of the first as McGuire singled, moved around to third on a Cisco error and stole home.
Hungate's solo home run in the bottom of the first tied the game.
McLennan took the lead with four runs in the second. McGowan and Braxton Hollenshead drew back-to-back walks, and Jon Tauzin singled to load the bases. Sydney Daley followed with a grand slam.
The Highlanders added two runs in the sixth. Rudkin and Grudzielanek both walked, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single by McGowan.
The Wranglers scored four runs in the eighth. Rheams drew a walk and Menendez singled. Both runners advanced on a walk and scored on single by Mora. Deaver hit into a double play, clearing the bases. Robert Duggar doubled and Chase Almendarez was hit by the pitch. Both runners advanced on a passed ball. Duggar scored on a single by Orlando Collazo. Phillips then singled to score Almendarez.
McLennan scored two runs in the top of the ninth. Stacy Heinatz singled and Tauzin hit a bunt single. Daley was safe at first on a Cisco error, bringing Heinatz in to score. Tauzin then scored on a fielder's choice by McGuire.
Cisco rounded out the scoring with two run in the bottom of the ninth. Menendez was safe at first and advanced to second on a Highlander error. Morales followed with a fielder's choice, putting Menendez out at third. Deaver singled. Mason Baker then singled to score Morales and Deaver.
